LIGHT IN THE CITY

Light in the City explores how light subtly transforms San Francisco's urban landscape, revealing new layers of depth in everyday scenes. As light shifts throughout the day and across seasons, it brings out unexpected details, changing how we perceive the city. Rather than seeing it through familiar concepts and labels, we begin to experience it as a harmony of form, light, and color.

A central theme in my work is the investigation of the familiar. Through daily walks around San Francisco, I pay close attention to places I know, observing the subtle shifts in light and color throughout the year. By visiting the same locations repeatedly—sometimes hundreds of times—I reflect on the minute changes that occur from one visit to the next. This practice helps me let go of expectations and remain open to new perspectives on familiar scenes.

The paintings often capture moments of quiet calm within the city. People are shown absorbed in their everyday activities—whether working, conversing with a friend, or simply moving through the streets—offering a point of connection for the viewer. In a city that is often fast-paced and overstimulating, these scenes invite reflection and contemplation, creating a space for stillness within the urban environment.
